dark days for press freedom in Turkey

Freedom of the press in Turkey? Nope. This is a bit of a scary time to be doing any sort of journalism in Turkey. On Friday, the Turkish government seized control of the country’s leading newspaper, Zaman, which has been critical of the current head of state, President Erdogan. The government has begun publishing a pro-government version of the daily newspaper, and have even deleted digital archives of the paper. (Print editions and backup files exist everywhere however!)

The Obama Administration and the United Nations have criticized the Turkish government for these actions. The newspaper itself has vowed to continue publishing its real version from offices in Germany. But these are dark days for Turkey.
